Qualcomm has acquired the generative AI division of VinAI, an AI research company based in Hanoi, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition strengthens Qualcomm’s push into AI-driven technologies.

VinAI, founded in 2019 by former DeepMind scientist Hung Bui, specializes in generative AI, including computer vision algorithms and language models. The company, backed by Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, primarily develops AI-powered automotive solutions such as in-cabin monitoring, security systems, and smart parking.

“This acquisition underscores our commitment to AI innovation,” said Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s SVP of Engineering. “By integrating VinAI’s talent, we enhance our ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions across industries.”

VinAI reportedly had around 200 employees across offices in Vietnam, the U.S., and Australia. The acquisition is expected to bolster Qualcomm’s AI capabilities in smartphones, PCs, and automotive technologies.

Bui, who serves as VinAI’s CEO, will join Qualcomm following the deal’s closure. “Our expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate Qualcomm’s innovation across multiple product lines,” he stated.

This marks Qualcomm’s second AI acquisition in 2025. Following its purchase of Edge Impulse, a German AI and IoT company, in March. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has emphasized the company’s focus on edge AI—technology that enables AI to run on devices without relying on cloud data centers.
