Google has officially raised the bar in AI reasoning with the launch of Gemini 2.5 Pro, its latest and most powerful multimodal model designed to think before answering. The new model, unveiled Tuesday, marks a significant leap in Google’s AI roadmap as it joins the growing race to build smarter, more accurate AI systems capable of handling complex tasks with human-like reasoning.

Available now for developers via Google AI Studio and for subscribers of Gemini Advanced, Google’s $20-per-month premium AI plan, Gemini 2.5 Pro introduces enhanced problem-solving skills fueled by advanced reasoning techniques. According to Google, this model represents their most intelligent AI release to date — a bold move aimed squarely at rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

What sets Gemini 2.5 Pro apart is its ability to pause, analyze, and “think” before delivering answers. This approach mirrors the latest wave of reasoning models sweeping the AI industry — systems that allocate more computing power and time to carefully fact-check responses. Since OpenAI’s debut of the o1 model in late 2024, tech giants have rushed to roll out their own versions, recognizing reasoning as the next frontier in AI performance.

Google isn’t holding back. The company made it clear that reasoning capabilities will be standard in all future AI models it releases. It’s part of a broader industry shift that has helped AI agents excel at math, coding, and autonomous decision-making — tasks that once required human oversight.

The new Gemini 2.5 Pro model delivers on that promise, outperforming not only Google’s earlier frontier models but also several leading competitors. In a major benchmark for coding performance, Aider Polyglot, Gemini 2.5 Pro scored an impressive 68.6%, edging out OpenAI, Anthropic, and China’s DeepSeek.

However, performance varied depending on the test. On SWE-bench Verified, a software development benchmark, Gemini 2.5 Pro scored 63.8% — better than OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek’s R1, but slightly behind Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which reached 70.3%.

When tested on Humanity’s Last Exam, a tough multimodal evaluation covering math, science, and humanities, Gemini 2.5 Pro scored 18.8%, surpassing most of its flagship rivals and proving its versatility across disciplines.

One of the most impressive technical upgrades is Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 1 million token context window. That’s the equivalent of processing 750,000 words — enough to analyze content larger than the entire “Lord of the Rings” series in a single pass. Google says support for 2 million tokens is coming soon, doubling its already massive capacity.

Additionally, Gemini 2.5 Pro is designed to excel at building visually rich web apps and tackling agentic coding tasks, reflecting Google’s strategy to push its AI into practical applications for developers and businesses alike.

While Google has yet to reveal the API pricing, it promises more updates in the coming weeks. For now, early access is available through its developer tools and premium subscription, giving users a glimpse of what could be the most capable AI model in Google’s lineup.

As AI reasoning models become the standard, Gemini 2.5 Pro positions Google as a serious contender in the race to dominate the next generation of intelligent systems — ones that don’t just answer but think.
