Shopee will officially stop offering J&T Express standard and economy delivery services in Indonesia starting April, the ecommerce giant confirmed. The decision, announced in a statement to Tech in Asia, applies only to the Indonesian market and does not affect Shopee’s operations elsewhere.

According to Shopee, sellers have been notified since March to prepare for the transition. “This ensures operational readiness ahead of the change,” a Shopee spokesperson explained. However, it remains unclear whether the move is temporary or permanent, as Shopee has yet to clarify.

While Shopee drops J&T Express delivery in Indonesia, the company noted that J&T Cargo, a separate service focusing on larger parcels of up to 600 kilograms, will remain available as a logistics option.

J&T Express has not yet commented on the development.

Despite the exit of J&T Express, Shopee users in Indonesia will still have access to 10 other logistics partners for deliveries. These include Shopee’s in-house Shopee Xpress (SPX), as well as major players like JNE, Pos Indonesia, Anteraja, and SiCepat.

These couriers continue to offer standard delivery, typically completing orders within two to seven days. Some also provide economy delivery, a cheaper alternative that takes longer to fulfill orders.

Previously, SPX and J&T Express were known for offering the most competitive shipping rates on Shopee, according to a Tech in Asia analysis. SPX’s growing role is evident, with Shopee CEO Forrest Li recently describing it as a strategic advantage. During Sea Group’s latest earnings call, Li emphasized SPX’s geographic reach, faster delivery speeds, and cost efficiency — all contributing to Shopee’s first full year of positive adjusted EBITDA.

The decision marks a significant change for Indonesia, J&T Express’ second-largest market after China, where it handles 4 million daily package deliveries across the country’s vast archipelago. J&T Express, which raised $450 million in its 2023 IPO after securing billions in venture capital, now faces losing a critical ecommerce partner in Southeast Asia’s largest digital market.
