Creating ethical AI doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with intention and the right people in the room. Here are key strategies that companies are using to get it right:

1. Run Bias Assessments Early and Often

Bias can’t be fixed if it’s not detected. Regular testing—from prototype to rollout—can reveal disparities in error rates, decision quality, and user impact across demographic groups.   • In the Netherlands, an algorithm flagged over 26,000 families for fraudulent childcare claims—most were falsely accused, many from immigrant backgrounds. The backlash led to public apologies and the collapse of the Dutch government.
  • LinkedIn adjusted its job recommendation algorithm after researchers found it favored men for high-paying roles. A new AI system was added to promote gender fairness in job suggestions.
  • Aetna, a US health insurer, found that lower-income patients were facing delays due to how claims were scored. After internal reviews, the company reweighted its data inputs to reduce inequality.
