Volvo is taking the lead in bringing Google’s latest AI innovation to the road. The Swedish carmaker announced it will be the first automotive brand to integrate Gemini, Google’s advanced chatbot, across its vehicle lineup. This bold move expands Volvo’s long-standing partnership with Google, pushing the boundaries of in-car tech once again.
Known for being an early adopter of Android Automotive OS — Google’s built-in operating system for vehicles — Volvo is now extending that collaboration by becoming the first to embed Gemini AI directly into its cars. Drivers can expect more natural and intuitive voice interactions, whether it’s asking for directions, translating languages, or searching the digital version of the vehicle’s user manual. Volvo says this shift will reduce drivers’ “cognitive load,” helping them focus on the road while staying connected.
AI That Understands You Behind the Wheel
Unlike previous voice assistants, Gemini offers conversational natural language capabilities, making it easier for users to speak as they normally would — no robotic commands required. With Gemini, drivers and passengers can send messages, request music, navigate seamlessly, and even access vehicle-specific information through casual voice prompts.
While Android Auto users will gain access to Gemini in the coming weeks, those with vehicles running Android Automotive OS (branded as “Google built-in”) will need to wait until later this year. Volvo vehicles will also serve as reference hardware platforms for Google, meaning they’ll receive new features and updates before they roll out to other automakers.
“Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first,” said Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s head of global software engineering. He described the collaboration as key to shaping the future of connected cars.
Driving the Future of In-Car AI
Volvo already benefits from early access to Google’s latest innovations. It was among the first to introduce built-in YouTube streaming, high-definition mapping, and voice-controlled climate systems. Now, with Gemini integration, Volvo cements its role as a tech-forward automaker pushing the envelope on in-vehicle intelligence.
Gemini is also becoming central to Google’s automotive strategy, as revealed at its recent I/O developer conference in California. The company showcased Gemini’s ability to work with core vehicle systems, such as navigation. Developers can now use three intent formats to let Gemini start navigation, surface search results, and enable custom voice actions, like reporting traffic congestion.
With cars becoming more connected than ever, Volvo’s early adoption of Gemini positions it at the forefront of the AI-driven mobility revolution — where smart assistants don’t just respond, but truly understand.
